New Year’s with the Fograms

I’ve never made much of a fuss over New Year’s, but last night was a new personal best at downplaying the whole dang deal. We didn’t go out or even watch the manufactured revelry on the teevee. Is Dick Clark alive this year? In suspended animation, maybe? I still miss Guy Lombardo myself.

We had a quiet dinner at home – burgers and fries, the latter part being our last blast of self-destructive food before embarking on our post-holiday diets, and had Baby Dog down to sleep by eight. Then we cracked open the Scrabble™ game and played possibly our worst game in years. We were both still wiped out from the drive back from Babs and lacked our customary lexicographical éclat. We both played somnolently and with little in the way of inspiration. Neither of us could scrape together a seven-letter word the entire game. Very few three-words-in-a-turn moves. The single biggest point score in the night was Mama Dog’s 45-point combination of “frothy” and “joey.” Best I ever did was a miserable 28 point combination of “qat,” “baa,” and “aa.” In the end we scarcely topped a combined 550 points, and Mama Dog was a good 70 ahead of me. The game ended just before midnight by the kitchen clock, so we went into the living room and turned the teevee on. Apparently the kitchen clock is slow; the ball had already dropped. Oh well. Next year, maybe.

Here’s the funny thing: no matter how old and cranky we feel, there remains an older generation to do us one better. Gran – Mama Dog’s mom – went out to a New Year’s party. It ended at 9 p.m.

My best New Year's Eve was spent going to an 11pm movie session (Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula) because I just missed New Year's Eve altogether. And got to watch a movie to boot.
